John and Alison have owned Ullswater Cabin from new, purchasing it towards the end of the Neaum Crag site development in the early 1990s. The site, located at Skelwith Bridge near Ambleside, consists of around 90 cabins, a small apartment block, and the original Victorian estate house.
All are set on a steep, wooded hillside overlooking Skelwith Bridge, at the foot of the valley leading into the Langdale Valley.
Both Alison and John are now retired. Alison began her working life in baking and confectionery before leaving to raise their two sons, Adam and Matthew. She later worked at a pre-school nursery and then as a sales assistant at a garden centre until taking early retirement.
Throughout, she supported John in building his business.
John spent forty-three years developing his own company in industrial cabinet making. Upon his retirement, their eldest son Adam took over management of the business.
Each cabin sits on its own freehold plot, while the wider site is collectively owned by cabin owners through shares in a private management company.
I am currently one of the owners serving on the Board of Directors, and as a long-standing owner I also advise on the upkeep of the site. A resident site manager is available in emergencies and is responsible for maintaining the grounds and the Pool Hall.
Around half of the cabins are let out during the summer months, including ours, though only to cover upkeep and service charges. Many of our visitors return year after year, including family and friends.

We had an amazing week at Ullswater Cabin. The cabin itself was perfect for a week for a family of 4 with children aged 7 and 10. They loved the table tennis and pool facilities. The location of the cabin is great both on the site itself and within the lakes. We didn’t need to drive for more than 20 minutes to go anywhere (we could have if we wanted to but didn’t need to) and fitted so much into one week. Would definitely recommend.

The property was very cosy and quite serene. There’s plenty of activities in the surrounding area and lovely walks straight from the door of the cabin. Overall brilliant place to stay. Thank you!
We have returned to Ullswater Cabin for a second consecutive year now, and the Cabin once again did not disappoint. Very clean, and simply beautiful, with the most peaceful location. There was very good organisation and contact from the hosts John and Allison, and we certainly hope to return again next year.
